What to visit in the Canary Islands

Roque Nublo Natural Monument

Better known as Roque Nublo, this natural monument has become one of the most important in the Canary Islands. This rocky formation was generated during several eruptive cycles that ended up creating the Canary Islands. It is located in the province of Las Palmas, framed within the Nublo Rural Park, which covers over 260,000 square kilometers, being the largest natural park in the Canary Islands. This park includes several territories of the municipality of Tejeda. To get to the monument we must walk a 4.8 km road. The time it takes to climb is approximately 1 hour or a little more. As we go up, we can have a spectacular view of the island. Once you get to the top, you will have an excellent view of the whole island. This monument has great symbolic value for the Canaries, since the natives who inhabited the island used this place as a centre of worship.

La Arena Beach

If you are in the Canary Islands, you can’t miss this wonderful beach. It is located in the town of Puerto de Santiago in Tenerife. It is the beach par excellence of the Canary Islands, for the quality of its waters and its beauty. It has the recognition of the blue flag, granted by the European Foundation for Environmental Education for the quality of its waters and for complying with a series of important environmental requirements. One of the most loved places by the locals and famous of the island, are the famous “Bancos”, which is a bus stop where there are four banks tile color. The beach is crossed by the Avenida Marítima Puerto de Santiago. Near the beach there are a lot of hotels, restaurants and shops where you can enjoy yourself and rest.

Cave of the Greens

Located in the municipality of Haría, on the island of Lanzarote, in the very north of the island, the cave of the greens is one of the essential places to visit in the Canary Islands. This cave, of volcanic formation, is part of the cultural and natural wealth of Lanzarote. The ancient inhabitants used it as a refuge to protect themselves from the corsairs that besieged the island. The name of the cave is due to the family of Los Verdes, who were the owners of the land where it is located. Inside the cave you can have an excellent walk through paths that will allow you to see the different chromatic shades of the rocks in combination with some specially placed lights to match and create a great visual effect. Inside there is also an auditorium where concerts are regularly held. To get there, you must take the LZ-205 road, once you are in the cave, the visits are made in groups of several people who are led by a guide who will inform you and tell you the most interesting aspects of the cave.

Siam Park

Inaugurated in 2008, this water park should be a must if you are going to the Canary Islands. The park has a Thai theme, with different attractions for children and adults to have fun. It is located in Siam Avenue on the Costa Adeje, in Tenerife. In addition to the attractions, there are restaurants, shops and private cabins in the interior. The service is of excellent quality and the facilities are quite safe. The magic of water parks is great and in this particular park you can enjoy a fun day in the company of family and friends. The opening hours of the park are from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. It is open 365 days a year, with few exceptions, so no matter what time of year you go, you can still enjoy this wonderful complex.

Lobos Islets

One of the many islands that we can find in the Canary Islands, this island is characterized by its beauty and for being one of the favorites of surfers thanks to the good waves. It covers 4,670 square kilometres, with a maximum height of 127 metres in the caldera area. The island is located in the northeast of the island of Fuerteventura, being a district of the municipality of La Oliva. It is framed within the Natural Park of Lobos Islet, so it is protected in its entirety. The name of the island is due to the fact that some time ago there was an important population of sea lions, also called monk seals, which are now in danger of extinction. To reach it you must cross the strait of La Bocaina. Once in the port, you can walk around the islet. There is no motor vehicle on the island, so you can have all the peace and quiet to stroll through its corners and bathe in its delicious waters.

Jandia Peninsula

If you are a lighthouse and hiking lover, you must visit the Jandia Peninsula. It is located at the southern tip of the island of Fuerteventura. It is one of the three most important peninsulas that the archipelago has. It has a length of almost 30 km and a width of 9 km. The territory of the peninsula is mainly sandy with little vegetation. You can visit two important monuments, such as the Lighthouse of Jandia and the House of Winter. The highest point of the peninsula is the Pico de la Zarza, with 807 m of height. From the peninsula you have a wonderful view of the whole Atlantic. You can reach it through the road that crosses it, passing by several beaches where you can enjoy a pleasant time.

Dunes of Maspalomas

On the island of Gran Canaria you can enjoy some wonderful dunes over which you can walk, fill your feet with sand and also slide. The dunes are located in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. It is considered a special natural reserve. The temperature in the dunes is always high and rainfall is low. Near the dunes there are several beaches, including a gay beach. The best thing about the dunes is that they are not so far from the town. Close to them is the Riu Palace hotel which is all the way across the front towards. Desert landscapes always cause fascination, that’s why you will love the Dunes of Maspalomas.

Cactus Garden of Lanzarote

Do you like Cactus? If the answer is yes, on your next visit to the Canaries you should visit this great cactarium, located in Guatiza on the island of Lanzarote. The space covered by the cactarium is shaped like an amphitheatre. In the past, a quarry for the extraction of volcanic sand operated in this area. There are more than 10,000 cactus specimens brought from various desert areas of the Americas, Madagascar, Morocco, Ethiopia and the Canary Islands. It was opened in 1991 and is publicly owned and administered by the Cabildo of Lanzarote. If you want to arrive to the cactarium you must take the direction of Garafía Avenue and in a few minutes you will be there.

Loro Parque

The Loro Parque is a fantastic zoo that has a large number of animals of different species that live in a really striking space. It covers an area of more than 13 hectares, distributed in 3 zones, in which you can find some species like gorillas, crocodiles and jaguars. The zoo has aquatic spaces in which different types of shows are performed with dolphins, sea lions and whales, the biggest show being that performed by parrots in free flight. Throughout the complex, a large number of tropical and subtropical plants are watered. We can also find a collection of various palms, orchids, cactus and dredges, which are endemic trees of the North African zone. The zoo is located in Puerto de la Cruz on the island of Tenerife. To get there you have to go along the Loro Parque Avenue.

Beach of the Americas

One of the luxury tourist areas of the island of Tenerife, Playa de las Americas covers a good part of the southwest coast of the largest of the Canary Islands. The coast is also known for having a large number of restaurants, shops and clubs, in which there is a very lively nightlife. The Av Las Americas, which runs along the entire beach, is one of the most visited areas by tourists precisely because it offers several attractions. Most of the beaches in the area are artificial, were made to give visitors and residents the opportunity to have a beach near the city. The Beach of the Americas is the busiest area of the Island of Tenerife. If you ever visit the Canary Islands, you should not stop walking there and enjoy everything that Playa de las Americas has to offer.
